Reading Characters and The Stereotypes They Represent

Rose DeWitt Bukater

Rose is the daughter of Ruth who is a very money-minded person. In the film, Rose is forced to go along with an arranged marriage with Cal all for the sake of money. She is not left with much choices as Ruth can be very persuasive to others. Since her father's death, according to Ruth, she and her daughter were left with nothing, except a "legacy of bad debts hidden by a good name", so she expects Rose to marry into money (Cal) in order to maintain the family's high social status and luxurious way of life.

Rose represents the rich and luxurious in this film where status and money is what's important in life. These people have to maintain their social status by marrying other high-ranked individuals. Most of these people have shallow hearts and they don't have others best intentions at heart. However, Rose had a more clear mind and saw that there more to life than living that kind of life.

Jack Dawson

Jack is this poor young men full of life trying to explore the world. He wins 2 tickets to the RMS Titanic along with his friend. Therefore he manages to get in at the very last minute. Although the tickets were just third class tickets , he still found excitement as it allowed him to continue exploring the world. He had a gift in drawing nude portraits of people. In the film, Jack managed to stop Rose from committing suicide at the back of the ship. Since then, he fell in love with Rose at the very first sight.

Jack represents the poor and low-class people. He lives a life where money is not really important. He finds the experience more important than having money. They are treated like dogs just because they don't have a social status and money. They were placed at the lowest part of the ship.

Complexities

When Cal found out about the affair between Jack and Rose, he was determined to eliminate Jack from Rose's life completely. He asked his assistant to frame Jack of stealing a very expensive diamond making Rose see that he was just using her to get to the wealth. However, Rose finally came to her sense and knew that Jack did not steal it and he actually loved her for all the right reasons. Rose finally admitted to Ruth and Cal that the life she had then was not what she wanted and chose Jack instead. When the ship sank, Jack died in Rose's arms.

Back up Statement With Evidence

Rose was born into a wealthy and high ranking family. Her life was all about showing wealth and living a luxurious life. She was even forced to marry someone whom she didn't love just so that she maintains the good name of the family and the high ranked family. However, she was not happy at all. She was not happy being the person that her mother wants her to be. She decided to kill herself so she could be free from the bondage towards her family. This shows that having wealth and a social status does not determine a happy life. Being happy is not about how much money we have but by how we live. In order to be happy, we must follow our hearts and always do what's best for us because the best things in life are not things.

2 Response for the "Week5: Semiotics and Reading Film"

  1. The characters are well chosen in creating this romantic film. the main character chosen for this movie are Leonardo Dicaprio (Jack Dawson) and Kate Winslet (Rose DeWitt Bukater) these two actors/actress are very suitable to be the main characters because of their "realness" in acting. The camera angle taken for every scene just pierced my heart. every angle chosen has its own meaning. Because of this movie, when I see an anchor, the first thing that comes into my mind is TITANIC.

  2. Based on the movie titanic, The actors really nailed the characters given to them. The characters in the movie really gets you in the mood for romance. For example Jack Dawson "leonardo di Caprio" who plays as a poor free lance painter is in love with Kate Winslet "Rose De Witt Bukater" who is a rich girl which is set to marry a well known person, Cal. Eventhough they have their ups and down in their relationship mainly because of their position they manage to stay together until the end.
